Ontology is generally concerned with the metaphysical nature of 'being'. In other words it is a theory behind "What exists", "What is", "What am I", "What is describing this to me".
Ontology is a part of philosophy that baisically means the study of existance and reality in attempt to determine what exists and what can be said to exist. I personally think this was the means of tryin to bring about purpose to our lives. The thought of "we are here to live, eat, multiply, then become fertilizer to the ground we walk on (personal thought)" maybe was not easily accepted.
